NMM History Symposium

Following a successful meeting in 2010, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Institute of Navigation are planning a second symposium to bring together current research in the history of navigation.

The symposium will explore the wider impact of the ‘discovery’ of longitude and the ways in which navigation has evolved since then. In particular it will aim to investigate the connections between navigational advances and the development of exploration, surveying, commerce and empire from the 19th century to today.

IALA training seminar on
risk management

The International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA), in conjunction with the Arabian Maritime Navigation Aids Services (AMNAS) will host an IALA training seminar on the IALA Risk Management Tool Box – PAWSA, IWRAP Mk2 & Simulation from 27th November to 1st December 2011, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Muscat.

This seminar will be within the framework of the IALA World-Wide Academy and will show how PAWSA and IWRAP Mk2 complement each other, review the utility of PAWSA to national administrations and the need for trained facilitators and introduce the revised and recently updated IWRAP Mk2. Furthermore the seminar will also provide training on the use of IWRAP Mk2, using practical examples.

13th IAIN World Congress

On October 27-30 this year, the 13th World Congress of the IAIN will be held in Stockholm, Sweden. The Congress is organised by the Nordic Institute of Navigation.
The Congress will cover navigation and positioning in a very broad way, including air navigation, eNavigation, high precision geodynamic positioning as well as GNSS development and modernisation, integrated navigation systems, eLoran and much more. The Congress will consist of plenary sessions, technical presentations and posters, an exhibition and a social programme. The Congress language is English.

We expect it to be one of the major networking opportunities this year, and there will be a unique dinner under the bow of the world-famous WASA battleship.

Deadline for abstract submission is 1 June 2009.
